Senior Power Systems Engineer
Birmingham, Alabama (hybrid considered)
Lead electrical power system projects, from studies and design review through testing and commissioning, and help grow SEA’s Electrical Power Systems practice.
About the role
We’re looking for a Senior Power Systems Engineer to lead the analysis, design, evaluation, and implementation of electrical power systems for commercial, industrial, institutional, and federal clients. You’ll provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and help shape SEA’s growing Electrical Power Systems practice, working on everything from power distribution and resiliency to microgrids and renewable energy. This role is based at our Birmingham headquarters, where our engineering teams work side by side. For highly qualified candidates, we’re open to discussing hybrid or other flexible arrangements.
What you’ll do
Lead the technical work on electrical power system projects.
Perform engineering evaluations, field investigations, troubleshooting, and technical analysis.
Support the planning, design, testing, startup, and long-term performance of electrical distribution and mission critical power systems.
Conduct or oversee power system studies, equipment evaluations, and performance assessments.
Review electrical designs, equipment submittals, sequences of operation, and technical documents for quality and constructability.
Develop and perform functional testing, and support commissioning, integrated systems testing, and system acceptance.
Verify systems operate as designed, document deficiencies, and find the root cause of technical issues.
Support owner turnover, training, and final acceptance.
Collaborate with owners, engineers, contractors, manufacturers, utilities, and testing firms.
Prepare technical reports, field documentation, project deliverables, and client presentations.
Mentor junior engineers and project teams.
Help with proposals, project planning, and business development.
What you bring
U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain required background investigations or security clearances
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, or a closely related field
10 or more years of progressively responsible experience in electrical power systems engineering or a related field, such as power distribution, utility infrastructure, industrial or mission critical facilities, electrical testing, or commissioning
Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)
Willingness to travel about 50% of the time
Nice to have
Professional Engineer (PE) license, or the ability to obtain one through reciprocity
Certifications such as CxA, BCxP, CBCP, NETA, or NICET
Experience with medium- and high-voltage distribution, utility interconnections, substations, switchgear, transformers, and protective relaying
Experience with power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, coordination, and arc flash
Experience with emergency power, generators, transfer switches, and UPS systems
Experience with battery energy storage (BESS), distributed energy resources (DER), solar PV, renewables, and microgrids
Experience with SCADA, electrical power monitoring (EPMS), building management systems (BMS), PLCs, and related controls
Experience in mission critical facilities, data centers, industrial facilities, or federal facilities, including commissioning resilient electrical infrastructure
Experience with ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or similar analysis software, and familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, NETA, and NFPA standards
Strong leadership, troubleshooting, technical writing, project management, and client communication skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam Revu, and commissioning platforms
Building Commissioning Engineer
Birmingham, Alabama
Lead commissioning of complex MEP, electrical, and life safety systems from design through occupancy.
About the role
We’re looking for an experienced Building Commissioning Engineer to lead commissioning of complex mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), power, fire/life safety, and integrated building systems. From design through occupancy, you’ll make sure systems run safely, reliably, and efficiently, and meet owner requirements, codes, and industry best practices. Relocation assistance is available.
What you’ll do
Lead the full commissioning process, from design review through functional testing, integrated systems testing, and occupancy.
Develop and carry out commissioning plans, schedules, test procedures, and integrated test matrices.
Plan and perform functional testing of HVAC, central plants, electrical distribution, emergency power, fire alarm, smoke control, and plumbing systems.
Lead integrated tests of emergency power, life safety, building automation (BAS), and system interlocks under simulated conditions.
Review designs and documents early to catch coordination gaps, commissioning risks, and testability issues.
Observe major equipment installation to confirm it’s ready, accessible, and compliant before testing.
Find the root cause of complex, cross-discipline issues using field investigation, BAS trends, and test data.
Document deficiencies and corrective actions, and identify whether each is a design, construction, or operational issue.
Prepare commissioning reports, deficiency logs, and closeout documents to SEA standards.
Lead commissioning meetings with owners, designers, contractors, and testing agencies.
Serve as a technical resource to clients and internal teams.
Mentor junior staff in commissioning methods, sequence development, testing, and troubleshooting.
What you bring
U.S. citizenship and the ability to pass required background investigations
Substantial experience commissioning commercial and institutional facilities, including central plant HVAC, electrical distribution, emergency power, and integrated life safety systems
Willingness to travel about 35% of the time
Nice to have
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, or a closely related field
Professional Engineer (PE) license, or the ability to earn one within a reasonable time
Commissioning certifications such as BCxP, CxA, CCP, or NEBB BSC
Familiarity with ASHRAE, IBC, IMC, IPC, IECC, and NFPA standards (including NFPA 3, 4, 13, 20, 25, 70, and 72)
Strong leadership, analytical, and diagnostic skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency with commissioning platforms, BAS interfaces, and Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
