Expertise: Operations and Maintenance, Sustainable Design/LEED, Water Management
Hossam is the Resource Efficiency Manager for Ft. Irwin in California. Ft. Irwin is a site that the Army is using to train its personnel for desert warfare and occupies a total daytime population of approximately 25,000 civilian, military, and contracted personnel. The base itself is hundreds of square miles, but the facilities (housing, maintenance, recreation, training, etc.) are all located within a single circular “containment” in the center of the valley.
Hossam’s support to the Department of Public Works includes support to the Energy Manager functions, zero net goals by 2012, and energy costs improvements with present utility costs of over $30 million a year. Additionally, goals include water conservation of the base as well as low cost no cost energy savings programs. Fort Irwin is on track to achieve 50 MW PV and the green zone in the near future.
Hossam’s background includes 25 years experience in engineering and building operations. His largest career energy savings have been in demand management through development of a retrofit project to the existing thermal energy storage, HVAC upgrades (chillers, variable frequency drives), lighting and controls, and motors. Hossam has conducted in-depth site surveys and audits to identify energy conservation opportunities associated with mechanical, electrical, and operating inefficiencies within the facility. The information has been used to develop and design a comprehensive technical offering that utilizes systems/services portfolio, resulting in long term operating efficiency improvements and savings to the customer. He has also been instrumental in the implementation of more than 40 practices related to Energy Conservation best practices.
Hossam has a Bachelors of Science in mechanical engineering and he is
certified as an Engineering-In-Training (EIT) in the State of California. He is also a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), a Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED). Hossam is certified with the Refrigeration Service Engineering Society (in Compliance with E.P. A. standards), California UST System Operator, ISO 9002 certification and Sick Building Syndrome. He is also a member of ASHRAE, AEE, ASME, NFPA and AWCI.
